[+] S.P.O.T.S. (Sun
Protection Outreach Teaching by Students)
Our partnership with the St. Louis-based S.P.O.T.S. program is
bringing valuable melanoma awareness to area high school
students.
Since 2006, Sun Protection Outreach Teaching by Students, under
the direction of Stephanie Lickerman, APRN, ANP-BC, has led an
educational movement to educate adolescents and future physicians
about the dangers of prolonged sun exposure.
Medical students from Washington University School of Medicine
and Saint Louis University School of Medicine currently bring
S.P.O.T.S. into the classrooms of more than 20 St. Louis area
schools each year, with early detection and prevention taught
through visual lectures, hands-on activities, a video featuring two
teens with melanoma and the use of a skin analyzing machine. In
2009, the American Academy of Dermatology awarded the S.P.O.T.S
program and video, "Get It Checked Out," separate Gold Triangle
awards.
